MATING RECOMMENDATIONS
A top-quality and tough performer over the span of five seasons, Mucho Macho Man is today a proven source of performers in his durable mould.
This $5.6 million earner and nine-time winner, who capped his career with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita, threw a real star in his first crop in Mucho Gusto, winner of the G1 Pegasus World Cup, alongside top turf filly Mucho Unusual, winner of the G1 Rodeo Drive Stakes and G2 San Clemente Stakes.
Such versatile quality was achieved out of a first crop of 69 foals and subsequently enhanced by the second-crop stakes winners City Man and Mongolian Wind.
City Man, who capped his year with a win in the G2 Ft. Lauderdale Stakes, was one of six stakes winners in 2022 for Mucho Macho Man to give him a 5% black-type winners to runners strike-rate; no other Kentucky-based stallion at $10,000 or under can boast a better figure.
A welcome member of the Rough’N Tumble sire line via its influential conduit Holy Bull, Mucho Macho Man is inbred twice to Mr Prospector, but in the fourth generation. He also carries only one strain of Northern Dancer, via Nijinsky, all of which makes him extremely easy to use.
He has already exhibited an affinity for Giant’s Causeway, the damsire of both Mucho Gusto and the G2-placed Belle Laura. The cross of Mucho Macho Man over Giant’s Causeway results in inbreeding to Blushing Groom, which is also found in the background to the stallion’s stakes-placed second-crop daughter Sincerity.
Mr Prospector is also found in the backgrounds of stakes winners Mucho Gusto (second dam by Seeking The Gold), City Man (dam by City Zip) and Mucho Amor (dam by Rock Hard Ten, who is out of a Mr. Prospector mare) in addition to the stakes-placed group Belle Laura (second dam by Mr Greeley), He’s A Macho Man (dam by Lemon Drop Kid), Whiskey Wednesday (dam by Grand Slam), Hartling (second dam by Afleet) and Mucha Mezquina (second dam by Grand Slam).
As for his sire, champion 2yo Macho Uno, he forged a successful relationship with Wild Again mares, from whom the son of Holy Bull sired G1 winner Macho Again and G3 winner Silsita out of a pool of just ten starters.
Wild Again also features in the background of Macho Uno’s G3 winner Kirby’s Penny, all of which makes Wild Again an interesting fit for Mucho Macho Man. And indeed there is early evidence that such a route could prove fruitful since Whiskey Wednesday’s second dam is a daughter of Wild Again.
Similarly, Hail To Reason features in the pedigrees of several talented Macho Uno runners, among them G1-winning 2yo Wicked Style (second dam by Devil’s Bag), G2 heroine Potesta (dam by Furiously, who is out of a mare by Roberto), Brazilian G3 winner Daltiva and the aforementioned Kirby’s Penny.
Interestingly, Daltiva and Kirby’s Penny are out of mares by the Forty Niner stallion Jules and his G1-winning son Peace Rules respectively; Jules is out of a mare by Halo.
Again, that suggests that mares containing Hail To Reason are worthy of consideration, and with that in mind it’s interesting to note that Mucho Macho Man’s stakes-winning daughter Mucho Amor is out of a mare by Rock Hard Ten, by Kris S.
Seattle Slew, meanwhile, features in the background of G1 winner Mucho Unusual via his son General Meeting, sire of her second dam. The blood of Seattle Slew’s great-grandsire Bold Ruler is prevalent within the North American thoroughbred population, but even allowing for its level of opportunity, there does appear to be affinity between Mucho Macho Man and mares carrying Bold Ruler.
For instance, the dam of Mucho Amor, the Unusual Heat mare Not Unusual, is inbred twice to Bold Ruler while dual stakes winner Mongolian Wind possesses a dam who is inbred four times.
High-class Canadian 3yo He’s A Macho Man is also out of a mare inbred to Bold Ruler.
Finally, the presence of Macho Uno presents breeders with the chance to inbreed to Adena Springs’ blue hen Primal Force. In addition to Macho Uno, the daughter of Blushing Groom foaled champion Awesome Again, whose line lives on today through Ghostzapper and his legion of sons alongside the likes of Paynter and Oxbow.
The idea of inbreeding to Primal Force, foaled in 1987, is still in its infancy but has already yielded G3 scorer Tommy Macho (by Macho Uno and out of a mare by Awesome Again) among a group of almost 20 winners.
