MATING RECOMMENDATIONS
Canada’s leading freshman sire of 2021, Shaman Ghost dominated his peers in 2022 to end the year with over $1.8 million in earnings to his credit.
Along the way, there were five black-type horses led by Slack Tide, last year’s Angie C. Stakes winner for whom a productive three-year-old campaign consisted of three wins led by the Kent Stakes and Seattle Stakes, both won by wide margins.
Bred by Mr. and Mrs. William T. Griffin, Slack Tide is out of the Northern Afleet mare Impeached and therefore representative of the increasingly successful Shaman Ghost - Mr. Prospector cross.
In all, five of Shaman Ghost’s stakes horses possess at least one line of Mr. Prospector in their female families. That is particularly true for the Gone West line, which appears in the background of this season’s two-year-old stakes winner Ghost Hero (second dam by Grand Slam), stakes-placed two-year-old Bootiful (second dam by Elusive Quality) and stakes-placed three-year-old Madiha (dam by the Elusive Quality stallion Great Notion).
In addition, the stakes-placed Highland Ghost has a second dam by Carson City while the aforementioned Ghost Hero is out of a mare by Super Saver, thereby adding further Raise A Native to the mix.
Indeed it is a pattern that follows the example set by his sire Ghostzapper, who has sired Grade 1 winners such as Better Lucky, Contested, Guarana, Molly Morgan, Nucky, Starship Truffles and Goodnight Oliver out of mares containing Mr. Prospector in their background.
Another fruitful pattern that is also already emerging is inbreeding back to Blushing Groom.
Shaman Ghost, of course, is the best son of Adena Springs stalwart Ghostzapper, in turn the best of son of fellow Adena stalwart Awesome Again. The latter is out of the Blushing Groom blue hen Primal Force and some of those that have added further Blushing Groom to Shaman Ghost have already been rewarded through the likes of the stakes-placed Bootiful Rose (dam by Animal Kingdom with a second dam by Cherokee Run) and Highland Ghost.
In addition, multiple winner Silent Ghost is out of a mare by Animal Kingdom’s sire Leroidesanimaux.
Gran Spirited, meanwhile, is inbred 4x3 to Awesome Again’s sire Deputy Minister. Out of a Sky Mesa mare, he also represents the Seattle Slew cross; with that in mind, it is worth noting that the dam of Ghost Hero is also inbred 4x4 to Seattle Slew.
Once again, this mirrors elements of Ghostzapper’s own stud record given that A.P. Indy features as the damsire of the Grade 1 winners winners Moreno and Mystic Guide.
Such a bright start at stud is in keeping with Shaman Ghost’s own record, which was so accomplished that he holds a place within the Canadian Hall Of Fame.
The Adena Springs homebred was a Canadian champion at three, when his four wins included the Queen’s Plate, and a multiple Grade 1 winner as an older horse, when he won the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes at Saratoga, in which he defeated the likes of Frosted and Catholic Cowboy, and Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap at the expense of Midnight Storm.
Competitive in Canada, New York, California, Florida and Kentucky during an extended period of time and over a range of distances, Shaman Ghost also won the Grade 2 Brooklyn Invitational Handicap at Belmont Park and ran second to Arrogate in the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park.
Tough, versatile, highly talented and well-bred, Shaman Ghost possesses all the attributes to become a leading Canadian sire, a notion that is supported by some excellent early results to date.
