MATING RECOMMENDATIONS
Not only is Silent Name one of Canada’s most accomplished sires but he also remains the only son of Sunday Silence at stud in North America. The sire line is renowned worldwide for its brilliance and durability, and Silent Name can be guaranteed to provide both in considerable measures.
Having supplied the Grade 1 Highlander Stakes winner Silent Poet in 2021, Silent Name enjoyed yet another big year in 2022 as the sire of five stakes winners - more than any other Canadian-based sire - and 12 stakes horses, a metric by which he dominates all Canadian stallions.
In fact, at the time of writing he was sitting on a stakes horses to runners strike-rate of 11.6% for the past year; while no other stallion came close in Canada, it is a figure which compares him very favourably to various high-profile Kentucky stallions.
Already a two-time champion sire, he is due to end 2022 as a top three living Canadian stallion for the sixth consecutive time.
Strega won the Ashbridges Bay Stakes, Banff won the Lake Superior Stakes, Silent Runner won the Lake Huron Stakes and Silent Poet was Grade 2-placed.
However, the star turn was Philip My Dear, a two-year-old colt bred by Adena Springs and sold for $100,000 as a yearling who earned over $300,000 in his first season racing for Raroma Stable as the winner of three races, including the Cup And Saucer Stakes at Woodbine. Also third in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes, he is one of five black-type two-year-olds for Silent Name this year.
Another standout, Fashionably Fab signed off her years by winning the Shady Well Stakes, her third victory in a row.
Four previous titles as Canada’s champion sire of two-year-olds underlines Silent Name’s ability to get precocious stock and at the time of writing, he is poised to be Ontario’s champion living sire of juveniles yet again.
Philip My Dear (dam by City Zip), Fashionably Fab (dam by Curlin) and Strega (dam by Distorted Humor) offer a great insight into Silent Name’s affinity with mares carrying Mr. Prospector. In fact, Strega is the second stakes winner for Silent Name (and the fourth winner from as many foals of racing age) out of a Distorted Humor mare after Crysta’s Court.
Overall, Mr. Prospector features prominently within his success, notably via Fappiano/Unbridled, who is found in the pedigrees of Bramble Queen (dam by Empire Maker) and Zestina (second dam by Unbridled), and also Conquistador Cielo, who is found in the pedigrees of stakes winners Banff, Silent Serenity and Hopping Not Hoping.
Mr. Prospector is also in the backgrounds of other stakes winners such as Silent Sonet (dam by Hussonet), Lokinforpuremonee (dam by Porto Foricos), Silent Love (dam by Not For Love), Crysta’s Court (dam by Distorted Humor), Master Spy (dam by Smart Strike), Clickity Clack (dam by Two Punch), Not So Quiet (second dam by Crafty Prospector) and Silentio (third dam by Mr. Prospector).
Typically, the Sunday Silence line reacts well to Storm Cat and Silent Name has proven to be no different.
Fanticola, for example, is out of a mare by Tabasco Cat, Not So Quiet is out of a mare by Perigee Moon and Listed winner Valiant Cat is out of a mare by Storm Cat himself. This season’s stakes-placed two-year-old Silent Fortune is out of a mare by Harlan’s Holiday.
Of the other Northern Dancer sire lines, Silent Name also reacts well to Danzig, which results in inbreeding to Danzig himself; progressive stakes-winning three-year-old Strega (via Danzig’s Beauty, dam of her damsire Distorted Humor), Grade 3 winner No Silent (dam by War Chant), Summer Sunday (second dam by Honor Grades) and Listed winner Zestina (dam by Hard Spun) are such examples.
Strega, whose second dam is by A. P. Indy, also further illustrates the good relationship Silent Name enjoys with mares carrying Seattle Slew.
For that, also look no further than this year’s Simcoe Stakes winner Gran Spirited (dam by Sky Mesa), the Grade 1-performing siblings Silentio (also a Grade 2 winner) and No Word, who are out of the A.P. Indy mare Listen A P.
Silent Serenity (dam by Capote), Be Vewy Vewy Quiet (dam by Malibu Moon) and My Silencer (dam by Septieme Ciel) are other stakes winners for Silent Name who contain Seattle Slew in their background.
Another element to Silent Name’s success has come with mares carrying Caro. Already a successful formula via Silent Poet, whose second dam is a daughter of Caro, alongside other Graded stakes scorers Summer Sunday and Fanticola, it came to the fore again in 2022 through the stakes-placed Stormy Silence (dam by With Approval).
Inbreeding back to Hail To Reason can also be considered given its results to date include stakes winners Bramble Queen, Pay For Peace, Professor’s Ride, Silent Sonet and Silent Fortune. Similar comments also apply to Blushing Groom, to whom both Philip My Dear and Silent Poet are also inbred.
