MATING RECOMMENDATION

American Guru offers the opportunity to tap into the famed Lyphard’s Delta family cultivated by Prince Saud bin Khaled’s Palides Investments prior to his death in 2011. It was at the dispersal of his bloodstock holdings that Camargue was purchased for $1.65 million to join Adena Springs and within the next two years, further lustre had been added to the family via the championship deeds of Royal Delta.

A grandson of Unbridled out of a daughter of Mineshaft, American Guru is bred along similar lines to Royal Delta, who is also a granddaughter of Unbridled and out of the A.P. Indy mare Delta Princess, a three-parts sister to Camargue. It is a versatile family that has enjoyed success on dirt and turf, and indeed American Guru’s race record boasts wins on turf and Tapeta, ranging from 5f to 8f, notably when running the mile at Belmont Park in a time of 1.32.09.

American Guru possesses a strong Mr. Prospector influence on both sides of his pedigree, something which makes him an interesting fit for the Northern Dancer line.

Over the course of his stallion career, Unbridled’s Song developed an affinity for Storm Bird-line mares, as illustrated by the G1 winners Buddha, Emcee, Magnificent Song and Thorn Song. And that affinity, particularly for Storm Cat, has gone on to aid several of his sons at stud including Liam’s Map, First Defence and Midshipman, all of whom have sired G1 performers out of such mares. There also seems to be a particular affinity for Hennessy and his sons, including Johannesburg.

Similar sentiments apply to Deputy Minister and his sons. Unbridled’s Song sired three G1 winners to mares hailing from the Deputy Minister line and that trend has since been reinforced through the studs records of various sons at stud.

In that respect, daughters of Awesome Again, Touch Gold, Dehere, Ghostzapper and Paynter should be taken into consideration; Ghostzapper and Paynter are also both out of In Reality-line mares, an influence that served Unbridled’s Song well by featuring in the background of G1 winners such as Unbridled Elaine, Splendid Blended and Unrivaled Belle.

Looking at the Mr. Prospector line, Unbridled’s Song also enjoyed plenty of success with mares containing Kingmambo and Forty Niner, notably via the latter’s sons Distorted Humor, the damsire of Unbridled’s Song’s Champion Arrogate, and End Sweep. 

There is also encouragement for anyone looking to inbreed back to Seattle Slew. Such inbreeding can be found in the backgrounds of 38 G1 winners, including Tiz The Law and Monomoy Girl in addition to Tourist, who is out of an Unbridled’s Song mare. 

Seattle Slew himself clicked well with Unbridled’s Song - think First Defence and Midshipman (himself the sire of four SW inbred to Seattle Slew) - and now we’re seeing the same with several of his sons; Liam’s Map, for example, is the sire of G1 winner Wicked Whisper out of a Bernardini mare.

Indeed, Bernardini looks a good fit for American Guru, especially as a reverse of the Bernardini - Unbridled’s Song cross is represented by G1 winner Capezzano. The stallion himself has also clicked with American Guru’s family as the sire of G1 winner Biondetti (a half-brother to Camargue). The cross does result in inbreeding back to A.P. Indy, but that is a pattern that has already come to the fore through the combination of Bernardini and American Guru’s damsire Mineshaft via G2 winner Coal Front.
